Hotel Schloss Eckberg Overview
You know what caught me off guard about Hotel Schloss Eckberg? It’s actually in a real castle – and I mean a proper 19th-century castle perched above the Elbe, not some Vegas knockoff. When you’re driving up Bautzner Straße from Dresden’s city center, you’ll think you made a wrong turn somewhere because suddenly you’re winding through this parkland and there’s this neo-Gothic tower rising through the trees. The whole approach feels almost secretive, like you’re sneaking into some nobleman’s private estate (which, honestly, you sort of are).
The thing is, staying here is genuinely different from your typical four-star experience. Sure, the rooms have all the modern stuff you’d expect, but you’re sleeping in spaces with these impossibly thick stone walls and arched windows that frame views of the Elbe valley. I mean, my room looked straight out toward the Blaues Wunder bridge – that’s the blue suspension bridge locals are always talking about – and in the morning, you can watch the river traffic while you’re having coffee. The restaurant sits in what used to be the castle’s great hall, complete with vaulted ceilings and medieval-style lighting, though the menu is thankfully more contemporary German cuisine than, say, roasted boar. Actually, their Saxon specialties are pretty solid if you’re into regional cooking.
What really works about this place is how it manages to feel both grand and intimate. The staff knows your name after one night, parking is easy (which anyone who’s tried to park in Dresden’s Altstadt will appreciate), and it’s quiet enough that you’ll actually sleep well – the castle grounds buffer you from any street noise. The location is honestly perfect if you want to explore Dresden properly. You’re about fifteen minutes by tram from the Frauenkirche and all the main sights, but you can also walk along the Elbe or explore the Dresdner Heide forest that basically starts at the hotel’s back door. Plus, being slightly outside the tourist crush means you get to see how Dresden actually feels when it’s not packed with tour groups. The only minor thing – and this is really nitpicking – is that some of the castle rooms can feel a bit chilly in shoulder season, but that’s sort of part of the charm. You’re staying in a piece of Saxon history that happens to have excellent Wi-Fi and a really good breakfast spread.

A lovely place with a historic atmosphere. – Martins from Luxembourg – April 25, 2025 (10/10)
As a history enthusiast, I always enjoy staying in historic places such as manors or castles—and this time was no exception. The entire property is beautifully restored and well maintained. The staff was very kind and accommodating. The reception staff helped me with a kettle when I asked for one to make tea in the evening, as there wasn’t one in the room. I also liked that checking out was simple—you could just drop the key into a separate box by the exit. Since the hotel consists of several buildings, there was no need to go to the reception, which was located in another building. Very convenient.
What could be improved: Unfortunately I had no time to visit restaurant. From outside it looked amazing. Perhaps next time!Fabulous Easter Holidays – Yuliia from Ukraine – April 24, 2025 (10/10)
