Hofgarten 1824 Hotel garni Overview
You know what struck me first about the Hofgarten 1824? It’s tucked right into Dresden’s Neustadt district on this quiet stretch of Theresienstraße, and honestly, the location is kind of perfect if you actually want to experience the city like a local. I mean, you’re literally a five-minute walk from the Hauptstraße party scene, but far enough away that you’re not dealing with drunk tourists stumbling past your window at 2 AM.
The building itself has this understated charm – it’s not trying too hard to be boutique-y, which I actually appreciate. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 3-star garni hotel (that’s “bed and breakfast” for anyone not familiar with German hotel terminology), meaning clean, comfortable, and refreshingly straightforward. The breakfast spread is honestly better than it needs to be – proper German bread, decent coffee, and they don’t skimp on the cold cuts and cheese. What I really loved though was how the staff seemed to actually know Dresden. When I asked about getting to the Frauenkirche, the guy at reception didn’t just point me toward the obvious tourist route – he told me about cutting through the Innere Neustadt and mentioned this little café on Hauptstraße where locals grab coffee.
Here’s the thing about staying in Neustadt versus the Altstadt (Old Town) – you’re getting the real Dresden experience. Sure, you’ll need to cross the Augustus Bridge to hit the major sights, but that walk along the Elbe? Absolutely worth it every time. Plus, Neustadt has this creative energy that the tourist quarter lacks – street art, independent shops, and restaurants where you won’t pay tourist prices. The Hofgarten 1824 sits right in the sweet spot where you can walk to a proper neighborhood bar for a Radeberger (Dresden’s local beer, by the way) but still catch the tram easily when your feet are tired. Parking can be a bit tricky in this area if you’re driving, but honestly, once you’re here, you probably won’t need your car much anyway. The 8.1 rating makes sense to me – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it delivers exactly what it promises without any unpleasant surprises.
Dresden’s hotels showcase the perfect blend of Saxon elegance and modern comfort, with many featuring classical music concierge services and traditional German hospitality.

Reviews of Hofgarten 1824 Hotel garni
Great staff and location – Norman from United Kingdom – April 13, 2025 (8/10)
All of the staff were extremely helpful. They recommended places to eat which was a real winner. They let me have an early breakfast as one of the tours collected me at 8:00 am – very helpful. They looked after my suitcase on my departure day as I didn't need to get to the airport until late afternoon. The lack of a front desk in the evening was a bit odd but I knew about that in advance. The room was on the Spartan side but very comfortable and heated just right. Who goes to a place like Dresden to sit in their hotel room all day anyway. The room was clean. The hotel breakfast buffet was ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. There was a great selection of fresh fruits; cereals; meats; cheeses and bread. I really liked where the hotel was located. The Neustadt is much quieter than the Altstadt and there was good transport over the river. There was a good choice of restaurants but my absolute favourite was Wadzke recommended by the hotel.
Good value for money apart from the breakfast – Oli from United Kingdom – January 5, 2025 (9/10)
The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was good value for money.
What could be improved: The breakfast was quite expensive for what it was and there was no hot food.Clean room with great location – Victoria from Germany – December 29, 2024 (8/10)
The room was rather big and clean. Check in was easy. The location is very good with easy access to the central station and the city center. The bed was confortable.
What could be improved: The pillows were very big which made them pretty unconfortable. The blinds did not have black out, so as soon as the sunrise comes the room becomes extremelly bright and that interfered with our sleep. The wi-fi did not work properly.Stay where calm and convenience co-exist – Yoko from Germany – December 24, 2024 (9/10)
An old building was renovated and convereted into a hotel with modern taste without vanishing former aspects that the original building had. The location was very nice, near to Bahnhof Neustadt and to some tram stations. Breakfast is good and enough with cozy jazz background music.
What could be improved: The atmosphere of rooms were a little bit too simple.Good value, clean hotel. – Eric from United States – August 28, 2024 (8/10)
