But here’s the thing locals know: those touristy spots get absolutely mobbed between 10am and 4pm, so having a quiet retreat this close means you can duck back for a coffee break or grab something you forgot without it being a whole expedition.

What I really appreciated was how the place handles the practical stuff without making a big deal about it. Check-in was straightforward (they’ll actually meet you there, which beats hunting for a key lockbox), and while parking isn’t included, there’s a garage about two blocks away that won’t completely destroy your budget. The building itself has that solid old European feel – thick walls, high ceilings, the kind of place that stays cool in summer without cranking the AC. It’s three-star accommodation that doesn’t pretend to be anything else, but does what it does really well. If you’re the type who’d rather spend your money on a nice dinner at one of the riverside restaurants than on fancy hotel amenities you’ll barely use, this place gets it. Plus, being in Altstadt means you’re literally sleeping inside a UNESCO World Heritage site, which is pretty cool when you think about it – even if the morning church bells might wake you up earlier than planned on Sunday.

  Located close to the (Mitte) train station it was a short walk to the apartment where we were met by our landlady for key handover. The Apartment was very clean, quiet, and spacious. The kitchen was well fitted out. A Rewe supermarket was minutes away, so very convenient. Well located to visit old town and the Christmas markets. We would happily stay here again.

  The apartment is nicely furnished with a very comfortable bed and is spotlessly clean. We appreciated that the owner was happy to bring forward the arrival time and was waiting for us at the property. The flat and the area are peaceful and quiet and the centre is an easy 15 minute walk. There is a REWE supermarket one street away to the East – not mentioned on Google maps.
  
  What could be improved: We were surprised that the defective oven, mentioned in a previous review, had not been repaired and that the owner did not mention it when she handed over the keys.
