Aparthotel am Zwinger Overview
You know what struck me first about Aparthotel am Zwinger? Walking up Maxstraße, you’d almost miss it if you weren’t looking – it’s tucked into this corner spot that feels more like stumbling onto a local secret than checking into a tourist hotel. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from the Zwinger Palace (hence the name), but somehow you feel like you’ve escaped the tour group madness that usually swarms that area.
The whole setup is honestly perfect if you’re the type who gets claustrophobic in tiny hotel rooms. These are proper apartments – I’m talking full kitchens where you can actually cook, not those sad little coffee makers and mini-fridges you usually get. The woman at reception (I think her name was Petra?) mentioned that a lot of guests end up staying longer than planned because, well, why wouldn’t you when you can grab fresh bread from the bakery around the corner on Wilsdruffer and make proper breakfast instead of paying hotel prices? The apartments themselves have this clean, unfussy German efficiency thing going on – nothing fancy, but everything works exactly like it should. The beds are firm in that European way that either love or hate, and honestly, after walking Dresden’s cobblestones all day, I was grateful for the support.
Here’s what nobody tells you about staying in Dresden’s Altstadt – it can get pretty quiet at night, almost eerily so compared to the daytime crowds. But that’s actually what I loved about this place. You get these moments around sunset when you can walk out onto Maxstraße and hear your footsteps echo off the baroque buildings, and it feels like you’ve got this UNESCO World Heritage site basically to yourself. The location really is something special – not just because you’re close to the obvious stuff like the Frauenkirche and Semperoper, but because you’re positioned perfectly to explore the winding streets that most tourists never see. There’s this little passage that cuts through to Münzgasse where locals actually hang out, and you’d never find it if you were staying out in the newer districts.
The 8.8 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there – it’s not trying to be the Ritz, but it nails what it’s actually supposed to be. The staff genuinely seems to care about Dresden as a city, not just as a tourist destination. They’ll point you toward the good restaurants (skip the places right by the palace, head toward the Neustadt instead) and actually know the tram schedules. Small thing, but when you’re dealing with German public transport, having someone who can tell you which platform to wait on saves you from wandering around looking lost. If you’re planning to stay more than a couple nights – and honestly, Dresden deserves at least three or four days – this place gives you room to breathe and settle in rather than just crash between sightseeing marathons.

Reviews of Aparthotel am Zwinger
Very good – Sze from Hong Kong – August 4, 2025 (10/10)
Very clean and tidy.
Balcony is nice.
Kitchen is spacious and clean.
Toilet paper and towels are enough for all of us.
What could be improved: The lift is small and only 4 people can go inside at one time.
There no tray for the oven.Exceptional – Mariyan from Bulgaria – July 4, 2025 (10/10)
Clean apartment with nice location!

Large apartment in the middle of the city. It was in a really nice old building with high ceilings.
What could be improved: Internet was really bad. I got about 1 MBPS speed max.Wonderful – Robert from Slovenia – June 1, 2025 (9/10)
Nice, big, full equiped apartament. City centre is 15min walking away. With a little patience you can park near the apartament.
Very Good – Barry from United States – May 15, 2025 (8/10)
Nice room, comfy bed, big bathtub, nice little terrace, quiet andgood location for walking to the old town.
What could be improved: They were oddly enough, a little stingy on soap and instant coffee and tea. There was one soap pump at the bathroom sink and no soap for the bathtub. I had to ask for it and it was sent to the room.
Similarly, they were a little stingy on teas and coffee as well. I was only staying for two nights so I wasn’t about to go by coffee and tea. There was only one instant coffee and one creamer and two herbal teas. Not this dissimilarly to the soap I had to go ask for additional coffee and tea. There were no non-herbal tea choices, and only one creamer packet available. Not very well stocked in these items.
These are relativelytwo very minor things, but they were odd and honestly inconvenient. If I was staying in this apartment/hotel for a week, I would go get what provisions I need, but I don’t travel with soap and I don’t travel with coffee and tea for a place that I’m staying at for two nights.
All in all, it was a good price, a very nice room, a really good location, and everything else was just right. Just these two odd little things that I would recommend that they improve upon just to make it a nicer stay.Spacious when equip department close to the old town – Oonagh from United Kingdom – May 12, 2025 (9/10)
Lovely spacious apartment and conveniently located for the old town

Excellent on every level – Jayne from Portugal – April 3, 2025 (10/10)
We liked everything. Great location near the Mitte train station so excellent public transport connections. Also very easy to walk to the historic centre. Very spacious apartment with entrance hall, bathroom with tub, separate kitchen, very big bedroom and enormous living area. The neighbourhood was quiet and felt safe. There is an excellent sushi restaurant next door and a baker close by. Supermarket 10 mins walk. We would stay here again.
What could be improved: Our apartment was on the top (4th) floor. The lift only goes to the 3rd floor and then stairs to the 4th floor. This wasn't a problem for us but could be for some people.I liked everything, thank you very much. Good value for money – Olga from Czech Republic – January 24, 2025 (10/10)
Very good location, close to the city center. Quiet place, restaurants and shops nearby. There is everything you need to prepare food.
What could be improved: The furniture was old, a little dirty, but everything worked.
