Fliegerhorst Overview

You know what? I wasn’t expecting much from Fliegerhorst when I first pulled up to Moritzburger Weg – honestly, the name threw me off a bit (it literally means “airfield” in German), but this place actually surprised me in the best way. It’s tucked away in Klotzsche, which I’ll admit isn’t exactly Dresden’s postcard neighborhood, but that’s kind of the point. You’re far enough from the tourist crowds swarming the Frauenkirche, yet the tram connection into the Altstadt is surprisingly decent – takes about 25 minutes, and you’ll actually get a seat unlike those poor souls staying right in the center.

The hotel itself has this unpretentious, almost residential feel that I really appreciated after bouncing between overly polished chain hotels. The lobby smells faintly of coffee and has these worn leather chairs that look like they’ve hosted countless business travelers over the years – which makes sense, considering how close you are to the airport and some of Dresden’s industrial areas. Speaking of the airport, you might worry about noise, but honestly? It’s barely noticeable. Maybe the occasional plane during the day, but nothing that’ll wake you up at night. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 3-star – clean, comfortable beds, decent WiFi that actually works (thank god), and bathrooms that feel recently updated. The breakfast spread is pretty typical German hotel fare, but the coffee is strong and there’s usually fresh bread from a local bakery, which is more than I can say for some places I’ve stayed.

What really won me over though was the staff – they genuinely seem to care about helping you figure out Dresden, not just checking you in and disappearing. The front desk guy (I think his name was Thomas?) gave me this whole rundown of how to get to Moritzburg Castle using local buses, which saved me probably 30 euros in taxi fare. Plus, there’s actual parking that doesn’t cost a fortune – try finding that anywhere near the historic center. Look, Fliegerhorst isn’t going to blow your mind with luxury amenities or Instagram-worthy views, but sometimes that’s exactly what you need. It’s reliable, reasonably priced, and run by people who know that travelers want practical comfort, not theatrical hospitality. If you’re planning to spend most of your time exploring Dresden (as you should) rather than lounging around the hotel, this is honestly a smart choice. Just don’t expect room service or a concierge in a fancy uniform – but you probably weren’t looking for that anyway, were you?

  • Wonderful – Weege from Germany – July 28, 2025 (9/10)

  • Makes me want to return here. Great place to start recovering from jet lag. Near Dresden airport. – Tim from United States – August 10, 2024 (10/10)

Small hotel with a restaurant. Perfection in traveling. Friendly staff, helpful and accommodating. I had a nice plate of goulash and a lager beer for dinner. Very tasty! Surface rail runs right in front of the hotel. We rented a car, but if we had planned better it seemed like we could have used public transportation to get here. Room was nice and clean. Bathroom had updated plumbing fixtures. Good water pressure. Very comfortable.
