Papageiennest Overview

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first saw “Papageiennest” (which means “parrot’s nest,” by the way), I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like a quirky little 3-star place tucked away on Zwickauer Straße. But honestly? This turned out to be one of those hidden gems that makes you want to gatekeep it from other travelers.

The thing about Plauen – and most people don’t realize this – is that it’s got this weird dual personality. You’re technically in Dresden’s postal code (that 01069 can be confusing), but you’re actually in this charming Saxon town that feels completely separate from the big city buzz. Papageiennest sits right in the sweet spot where you can walk to Plauen’s lovely old town center in about ten minutes, but you’re far enough from the main drag that you won’t hear any late-night street noise. The building itself has character – I mean, it’s not going to win any architectural awards, but there’s something endearing about the way they’ve maintained that slightly retro German hotel vibe without letting it feel dated.

What really got me was the attention to detail. The rooms are clean in that distinctly German way (you know what I mean if you’ve traveled here), and while they’re not huge, everything just… works. The beds are actually comfortable – not those rock-hard European mattresses that leave you walking funny for days. Parking was surprisingly easy too, which is saying something since finding a decent spot in this area can be a real headache during peak season. The staff genuinely seems to care about the place, and I noticed they remember your name after like, one interaction. That 9.6 rating isn’t just people being generous – they’ve earned it through consistent small gestures that add up to something special.

The location is honestly perfect if you want to explore the real Saxony without dealing with Dresden’s tourist crowds (though the train connection is solid if you do want to day-trip to the big city). There’s this fantastic little bakery about three blocks down that locals line up at every morning, and you’re walking distance from the Elster river if you’re into those peaceful waterside strolls. I actually ended up extending my stay by a night because checkout felt too soon – and that’s not something I do lightly when I’m traveling on a budget. If you’re looking for flashy amenities or Instagram-worthy lobbies, keep scrolling. But if you want a place that feels like home while you explore one of Germany’s most underrated regions, Papageiennest delivers in all the ways that actually matter.

Reviews of Papageiennest

  • Very clean and cozy – Viktoriia from Poland – November 11, 2024 (10/10)

    Everything was great!
    Thank you!

  • Adventures of a Dresden half-marathon runner and his partner – Steve from United Kingdom – October 29, 2024 (10/10)

A cosy and snug studio apartment with pretty much everything needed for a short stay. The key handover was straight-forward and Falk was willing to arrive a bit earlier than check-in upon request as my partner and I drove over from the neighbouring Bundesland. Bathroom was spotless, shower was excellent, the WiFi was reliable, and any concerns about the parrots being loud were totally unfounded as they were generally very quiet after around 9pam to 7-8am in the morning.

For those who need supplies, there's a supermarket on Budapester Strasse around 200 yards away, car parking is free and available next to the complex, and buses stop close by to boot, in a quiet location around 20 minutes walk from Dresden's world-famous Altstadt/Old City.

And the parrots were beguiling. My partner in particular adored watching them, and it was heart-warming to see them rescued and being able to fly around after what they must have gone through before.

What could be improved: Two very minor issues which didn't remotely impact on enjoyment – the kitchenette tap was loose and controlling the heating system was a little splenetic.

  • Wonderful – Janet from New Zealand – September 28, 2024 (9/10)

Near to train station – quick bus ride to the old town and attractions although you could probably walk it in 20 mins. Apartment was great – loved the parrots outside. The host let us store our luggage

    What could be improved: Nil

  • Lovely few days in Dresden – Andrzej from Poland – August 18, 2024 (10/10)

Lovely studio in a quiet location with parking. Perfect for a few days in Dresden. Walking distance to the old town.Lidl 200 meters away. Really helpful landlord . excellent restaurant if you need at the premises. Comfy bed . Beautiful parrots to admire just outside.

  • Exceptional – Alberto from Italy – June 14, 2024 (10/10)

Beautiful piece of heaven in Dresden.
You feel like being fully immersed in nature with all the gorgeous parrots.
The room is warm, comfortable, clean and has with everything you need.
The host was always available and provided me all the infos about the neighbourhood and how to reach the centre of the city.

  • The perfect place to stay in Dresden – Carolinet from United Kingdom – September 19, 2023 (10/10)

Excellent location, short bus ride or 20 minutes walk from the centre of Dresden. Quiet street with plenty of free parking though host could have allocated us a private space if necessary. Supermarket and two restaurants nearby. Extremely comfortable bed – the best we had during our holiday. Big room with everything we needed. WiFi worked very well.

What could be improved: Nothing – it was all good.

  • Great stay just as described – Gwynn from United States – September 6, 2023 (10/10)

This apartment was about a 15 minute walk from both the train station and the city center. I did it easily with my luggage in both directions. It was up one flight of stairs only and the host helped me with that. He was on site when I arrived and check in was easy and quick. The room was just as pictured, kitchen had everything I could need, and the grocery store was just a few minutes walk. People mention the parrots – they were totally silent at night and I loved seeing them when I arrived and left (it’s a rescue, they were so pretty, and just made the place unique).

What could be improved: Nothing to not like.

  • The stay was amazing, both the place and its owner are the best – Jakub from Poland – August 26, 2023 (10/10)

Everything was absolutely fabulous, the owner was already waiting for me and my partner in front of the place to give us keys and explain everything. He was very kind and helpful, showed us where the nearest bus stop and supermarket are, he even checked weather broadcast for us for the rest of the day! The place is about 20 mins of walking from city centre, but you can also take a bus which is also very close. The room was very nice and bright, with fully equipped kitchen and air conditioning. And of course the greatest attraction – the parrots! They are beautiful and some of them can even say simple greetings! It can be quite noisy outside during the day but there's no need to worry about comfort because a) they sleep at night and b) windows are silencing the room very well

  • Exceptional – Piotr from Poland – May 8, 2023 (10/10)

Everything was great! Place is very close to city centre. Room is comfortable, spacious and has everything you might need. Kitchen is well equiped. Parrots are loud when you're near them, but they're quite whole night. Bed is great. Free parking spot.
    I highly recommend it.

  • Exceptional – Vojtěch from Czech Republic – April 14, 2023 (10/10)

The room is spacious modern with parrots paintings. I really liked the view from the window on the birds. Parrots were silent during the night. The bed was huge and soft. The bathroom had big shower for 2 people. The soap and shampoo was luxurious. The kitchen had coffee machine and we got many coffee capsules for free. The TV had over 100 programs, Netflix and other apps. The owner is super friendly handsome man. He recommended us where to go, what to see, where to eat. The supermarket, fish market and amazing fish restaurant is nearby.
