Ferienhaus -Am alten Dorfplatz- Overview
So I stumbled across this place called Ferienhaus “Am alten Dorfplatz” while exploring Dresden’s Pieschen district, and honestly? It’s one of those finds that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something the tour groups haven’t ruined yet. The name literally translates to “holiday house at the old village square,” which sounds quaint but doesn’t really prepare you for how charming this spot actually is.
Here’s the thing about staying in Altmickten – it’s technically Dresden, but it feels like you’ve stepped into this pocket of old Germany that somehow survived everything history threw at it. The ferienhaus sits right on what used to be the village center back when this was all farmland, and you can still see those cobblestone edges peeking through the modern pavement. I mean, Dresden’s city center is gorgeous and all, but there’s something refreshing about waking up where locals are walking their dogs instead of tour buses idling outside your window. The tram connection is actually pretty solid – you’re maybe 15 minutes from the Frauenkirche, but you’ll sleep through the night without hearing a single drunk tourist stumbling around.
What really got me was the attention to detail in the place itself. The owners clearly put thought into making it feel like an actual home rather than just another rental property. The kitchen has proper German appliances (that dishwasher is quieter than the one in my actual apartment), and they’ve managed to blend traditional Saxon touches with modern comfort without making it feel like a theme park. You know what I appreciated? The windows actually open properly, and there’s decent insulation – something you can’t always count on in these older German buildings. The whole place feels substantial, if that makes sense. Thick walls, real wood floors that don’t creak, the kind of solid construction that makes you understand why German engineering has a reputation.
Parking was surprisingly easy too, which anyone who’s driven in German cities will tell you is basically a small miracle. The neighborhood has that lived-in feeling where you’ll see the same baker opening his shop at 6 AM and kids riding bikes after school – the kind of authentic German life that’s harder to find in the touristy quarters. Sure, you won’t have a hotel concierge or room service, but honestly, the local bakery around the corner makes better brötchen than most hotel breakfast buffets anyway. Plus, that 9.5 rating isn’t just inflated marketing nonsense – it’s what happens when someone actually cares about creating a space where people want to stay, not just sleep.

Liebevoll eingerichtet mit allem, was man braucht.
Supertolle Wohnung am Elberadweg – Bettina from Germany – June 10, 2024 (10/10)
Eine superschöne Ferienwohnung. Eingerichtet mit wunderbaren Dekorationen, die das Betreten der Räume zum Erlebnis macht. Die Lage fast unmittelbar am Elberadweg ließ keine Wünsche offen.

What could be improved: /Absolutely amazing place. Hope to be back someday. – Maciej from Poland – October 9, 2023 (10/10)
Absolutely great place for a weekend stay in Dresden.
Peaceful and quiet surroundings – feels like a village in the middle of the big City – with beautiful Elbe just around the corner (must also mention the nice reastaurant with a river terrace and nice benches just 50-100 meters walk from the house).
The house itself is very big and comfortable. There is everything – and even more – that you mey find useful during the stay in Dresden. You can see and feel that a lot of love and effort was put into this place.
Parking place located next to the house. The kitchen is equipped with everything you may need and is really huge. The same refers to the living room.
You can easily get to the City Center with tram (actually during our stay there was a bus due to some roadworks taking place in the area nearby). It takes approx. 5 minutes walk to the stop. And then you need approx. 30 minutes to get to the amazing Dresden old town or fantastic Neustadt. Alternatively it takes approx. 12-15 minutes to get there with a car and there are many well located parking slots that cost approx. 1,5 euro/hour.
And last but not least ir rock'n'roll hosts were really, really nice and I would give 12 out of 10 if that could be possible.
Hope to be back some day.
What could be improved: Everything was perfect
